2025-2026

Friday 19th December

We have had a lovely final week in Year 3 doing lots of Christmassy activities. We hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing you back in January.

Merry Christmas, Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 12th December

We are so enjoying the build up to Christmas in year 3. On Thursday we completed our elf run and had great fun doing so!

Amongst all our festive fun, we finished our English unit and completed our addition and subtraction unit in Maths. We impressed everyone with our Spanish speaking and listening as we showed off how much we have learnt this half term as well.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 5th December

We have had yet another busy week filled with making Christmas cards and enjoying Christmas crafts.  We began our new unit in English, we are going to write an information report about foxes so we began by researching lots of facts. We continued our column subtraction and addition unit maths, we are really getting the hang of it now. The highlight of our week though was our trip today to see 'The Little Mermaid' at the New Vic Theatre.  It was just amazing and our eyes lit up with excitement as we watched the aerial acrobats dance high in the air.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and hope to see you all at the Christmas Fair.

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 28th November

This week we have had a very busy week! We finished our stories based on the fable narrative Fox by Margaret Wild and began to research interesting facts about foxes ready to write an information leaflet. In Maths, we have been working super hard on learning column method to add and subtract two numbers.

In Forest School this week we have begun making Christmas decorations and we learnt about Advent from Reverend Sandi.

We are so excited for the upcoming week, especially the theatre trip next Friday followed by the Christmas fair!

Please remember that children do need to bring in water bottles each day, especially in these months were there are a lot of viruses going round.

Have a lovely weekend, Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 21st November

Another packed week in Year 3! This week we attended church for our Christingle service with Rev. Sandi. We learnt about all the individual parts of a Christingle and what they represent. We also lead the whole school in the Affirmation of Faith.

We had our PE assessments this week which we tried really hard in and showed how kind we can be by cheering all of our classmates on.

In English we have now finished planning our fable narratives based on Fox by Margaret Wild - we can't wait to write them next week! Maths has been very tricky lately but we are persevering in learning column addition and subtraction and we even moved on to learning about exchanging this week.

In PSHE we have been learning about different kinds of families and how they might look. We were super respectful of one another during this lesson and asked some very thoughtful questions.

Please remember that as the weather gets colder, children must have warm coverings for outside. A reminder as well that Forest School is on Tuesdays and we need waterproofs and wellies for this.

Have a lovely weekend!

Friday 14th November

What a wonderful week we’ve had in Year 3, we have continued our learning about addition and subtraction in maths, wrote amazing setting descriptions in English and enjoyed learning new notes and playing our instruments in music.
We are incredibly proud of your children and enjoyed sharing their learning with you this week.
Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor 😊

Friday 7th November

We have had a lovely first week back after half term - hopefully everyone is feeling very refreshed following the break! On Monday, we came into our classroom and there was a forest picture on the board, some sounds of the forest, burnt logs, feathers, a picture of some eyes and four strange words around the classroom. We predicted that our English text was going to be about Puss in Boots or a fox and a bird. It was very exciting!

In Maths, we have moved onto adding and subtracting with exchanges which has proved to be a very tricky topic. In our PE lessons, we have moved onto our new topic of basketball which we are really looking forward to.

We are very lucky to have found out that we will be continuing with Forest School this half term! We cannot wait to spend more time in the forest with Mr Simmons so please remember wellies and waterproofs - as the weather grows wetter, we will not be allowed into the forest if we don't have the appropriate clothing.

We are looking forward to continuing all our subjects throughout this term. Have a lovely weekend!

Wednesday 22nd October

What a wonderful whirlwind of a week we've had.  We completed our artwork, they are pretty amazing even if we do say so ourselves.  We finished our publishing, creating our second class book and continued with our addition and subtraction in maths.

Our final worship was 'Pumpkins of Peace', our pumpkins shone as brightly as stars and took pride of place in the front of the hall. We talked about famous peaceful people who choose to use kindness, respect and communication instead of fighting to solve problems.  They work to create harmony in their family, school, and community.

Half term homework is to take part in the TTRS battle against Year 4 and a write book review please.

We hope you all have a wonderful, restful half term and look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 4th November.

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 17th October

We have had another very busy and fantastic week in Year 3. We wrote our explanations to the Mayor of how we would build our traps and Mrs Hartley is going to post them on Monday when we’ve written them neatly. We had incredible ideas and hope the Mayor likes them! In Maths we have been working really hard on our addition and subtraction unit. We have been amazing at adding ones and tens and cannot wait to continue.

Mrs Forrester was so impressed by our Spanish end of unit quizzes on Thursday and couldn’t wait to tell Mrs Hartley all about it. We are looking forward to finding out what our next unit is after the break. In History we have also completed our on the Roman’s and we are excited to begin Geography next half term.

Next week we will be having our first KiVa lesson which we’re very excited for. A reminder that, as it is the final week of half term, there will be no Forest School so there is no need to bring wellies and waterproofs on Tuesday. Please still send children in their PE kit.

See you next week for the last three days before half term!

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 10th October

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 3.

When Mrs Hartley came into the classroom on Monday morning, she was shocked to find a letter addressed to us. We read it together and discovered that the Iron Man had escaped his trap and the mayor needed our help to design a new one! We had great fun exploring different designs in Forest School on Tuesday and drew our first drafts later in the week.

We have now completed our place value topic in maths and we look forward to starting our new unit of addition and subtraction next Monday.

It was so lovely to welcome our families into class on Wednesday for our learning exhibition. The children were overjoyed to show off what they have learnt so far this year and to challenge you all with different tasks – what amazing writers and designers we have among us!

In PE this week we practiced defending by playing some great fun games such as sharks and fish and bench ball. We practiced how to deal with our emotions when we don’t win a game which is a really tricky thing to master.

We have nearly completed our Spanish topic for this term, and the children had such fun learning a song to help them remember their numbers – they even managed to make it all the way to 20 even though we should have stopped at 10. What superstars!

In Art, we designed and sketched the monsters from our threat narrative, we had to think about the shading and the texture.  We really enjoyed bringing them to life and showing you all at the Learning Exhibition.

In Music, we put our instruments together all by ourselves, we are getting really good at this now.  We then learnt a new rhythm and reminded ourselves of the notes we have been taught.

We hope you enjoy your weekend, and we’ll see you all next week.

Friday 3rd October

We have had a wonderful week in Year 3, we have published our threat narratives, practised our flexible partitioning in maths and identified some bones in the human body.

In English, we completed our threat narratives, they were all amazing and made Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor a little scared.  We then used our best handwriting to publish them for our amazing writing book.

In Maths, we practised using flexible partitioning with hundreds, tens and ones.  We used part-whole models to show 3-digit numbers and completed sentences to describe each number we had made. We also used place value counters to represent numbers in our place value charts.

In Science, we learnt that the human skeleton supports the body and protects important organs like the brain and heart.  We then had to label the skull, spine, pelvis, ribcage and femur on a skeleton.

In Forest School, we created our own activities to foster our curiosity and our love for nature. We spent time enjoying each other’s company, building dens and swinging in the hammocks.

In History, we learnt about houses in Roman times.  Housing in Rome was primarily of two types. The vast majority of common Roman citizens or people from lower sections of society lived in apartment complexes called ‘Insulae’ and the rich and influential Romans resided in large and luxurious complexes called ‘Domus’. Many rich Romans also owned opulent residences in the countryside, called ‘Villa’.

In R.E, we discussed what it means to be called by God. We learnt that in the Old Testament Prophets were called by God to give his message to the people. The Prophets were telling the people to turn back to God and mend their relationship with him. This is the beginning of God’s salvation plan.

In P.E, we practised our football skills, we dribbled, past the ball to each other and then had our very first football match. It was great fun!

Just a quick a reminder about Forest School - everyone needs a change of footwear and waterproofs please.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 26th September

Yet another great week of learning in Year 3!

We had lots of maths quizzes to complete this week, we worked carefully on the computers to figure out some tricky questions which included number lines, addition and subtraction and even fractions.

In English, we began to plan our very own threat narrative.  We used our imaginations to decide what our character could be and how they emerged.   We used our working wall to help us with vocabulary and found synonyms for words in our new synonym pots.

Forest School was great fun this week, Mr Simmons showed us how to drill holes in acorns and make bracelets.

In History, we discussed why the Romans came to Britain - we said the main reason was to gain power but they also needed supplies from our country too.

In P.E, we worked on our turning skills. We then played our first game of football as a class to practice shooting.

In Art, we looked at the artist Antony Gormley and how he sketched figures.  We then drew pictures of parts of the Iron Man, focusing on shape and form.

Finally, our week ended with making animals from recycled materials to display in church.  They were all absolutely amazing.

Well done to everyone who took part in the TTRS battle, we were so close but we got pipped at the post by Year 4 (only 30 points were in it though)

We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

Friday 19th September

What an amazing week we’ve had in Year 3, it has been filled with writing character descriptions in English, flexible partitioning in Maths and learning notes in music.

In our class worship time, we discussed the Creation Story. We thought about what God created on each day. We discovered that on three of the days, God created things that we can eat and be thankful for. We then thought about our own lunchtime prayer and what we are actually thankful for.

In Maths, we began to partition numbers up to 1,000 in different ways.  Partitioning is a useful way of breaking numbers up into smaller parts, making them easier to work with.  It is helpful for when you want to add or subtract larger numbers.

In English, we continued our learning about the Iron Man, we wrote brilliant descriptions all about him and the way he emerged from the cliff top.  We also used drama to show our emotions and how we would feel if we were Hogarth’s position.

In PSHE, we thought carefully about everyone we are thankful for, which included the police, teachers and ourselves. We then talked about people who we are thankful personally and what we do to make them feel special. Finally, we pretended to be reporters and asked our partners why we are friends, why we like each other and if there is anything that annoys us.

We had great fun in Forest School searching for gems. We found several beautiful gems which we thought were part of the Iron Man's eyes. Following this, we all either made characters from clay or metal objects.

In Music, Mrs Landon showed us some musical notes, we learnt that notes show the pitch and of the individual note.

Finally, Mrs Forrester and Year 4 have challenged us to a battle. We quickly accepted their challenge!

The TTRS Battle of the Bands is fun competition where we compete against each other to

enhance our enthusiasm for practicing times tables.  Please log onto TTRS as often as you can - the battle has begun!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and will see you all on Monday ready for another busy week filled with learning.

Friday 12th September 2025

What an amazing first, full week we’ve had in Year 3.  It has been filled with fun forest school, outstanding orienteering and marvellous music where we chose our very first instrument to learn.

This week in English, we have been focusing on the text ‘The Iron Man’ we read the first chapter and then had to describe what he looks like and how he moves.   We also found the definitions to some quite difficult vocabulary by using dictionaries independenly for the very first time.

In Maths, we have continued our learning on numbers to 100.  We counted in 10’s and 100’s and completed lots of different activities.

In Art, we learnt about the artist JMW Turner.  Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London, England, on April 23, 1775.  Turner was a landscape painter, traveller, poet and teacher. At the age of fourteen, he became a student at the Royal Academy of Arts.  We are looking forward to seeing some of his famous paintings and experimenting using his unique style.

In Forest School, we went on the hunt for clues made of metal. Mr Simmons told us he had seen a large figure overnight and then this morning, he found lots of metal objects lying around. We found lots of clues and finally figured out, we must have had a visit from the Iron Man.

We really enjoyed our first full P.E lesson of Year 3 and the sun was even shining. We began by practising different ways to move around without bumping into one another and balancing on one foot to get our bodies warmed up. It was great fun!  We then focussed on our passing skills with a focus on control; just like the pro footballers do.

We had great fun outside using our new orienteering course. We had to use a school map and locate different numbers, letters and pictures around the playground.

I think the highlight of the week was choosing our very own instrument to learn.  We had the choice of a clarinet, trumpet or saxophone.  It was so exciting as Mrs Landon showed us how to put our instruments together and we even had a go at buzzing.  It was amazing!

The children will all be bringing home an instrument loan agreement, please sign and return the form asap in order for them to bring home their instrument.

We hope you all have a wonderful, restful weekend.

Friday 5th September 2025

Wow, what a start to the year we've had, we are incredibly proud of everyone!

We began the week with learning our new class routines and reminding ourselves of the school rules.  We love our new classroom and have quickly adapted to life in Key Stage Two, however, yesterday a mysterious creature trashed our room and we discovered some pictures which gave us some clues.  We then spent some time  discussing who or what we thought had made the mess and wrote predictions in our new books.

P.E, was a treat this week, we enjoyed time outside and the sun was even shining a little.  We played some team games in preparation for our new unit; football.  We also drew our self portraits and displayed them proudly around our school rules.

Just a few things to mention, P.E will be on a Tuesday afternoon, so the children may wear their P.E kits then.  It is also Forest School on a Tuesday morning, so please remember wellies and waterproofs.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Hartley and Mrs Taylor

DT tomato pasta making

Today we enjoyed making tomato pasta. We used knives safely to cut our vegetables. We then used oil and herbs to make our delicious sauce and some of us had grated cheese. We loved our home made tomato pasta!

Tuesday 15th July

We have had a fantastic trip learning all about the Romans! Please enjoy our photos below:

Friday 4th July

We have had a very active week swimming every day! Thank you so much for all of your organising, washing and help with swimming as I know it's an extra thing to think about and prepare in an already busy half term! The children have thoroughly enjoyed swimming daily and I'm sure are making phenomenal progress.

In Maths this week, we have looked at 2D and 3D shapes, including their properties! In English this week we have been looking at our model text- a newspaper report about two missing children who are found! Next week we will be writing a newspaper article about what we saw last week in the forest! Our foundation subjects have been affected a little by our swimming but we have still enjoyed lots of fun learning, like our Science lesson about muscles, including a practical session making a model with elastic bands and lolly sticks. The music concert was a highlight and the children should feel very proud of their performance as a collective and with their amazing solos.

Friday 27th June

We have had a wonderful week of learning! In Maths this week, we have looked at horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines!

In English this week we have finished our lost narratives and we published these. On Friday Mrs Sant told us about some shocking footage on the CCTV in Forest School: a figure dressed in all black with a pointed hat was chasing children through the forest. When we investigated, we saw breadcrumbs, objects that may belong to a witch and we thought of unanswered questions! When we went out for break, some of us thought we saw the witch, and Mr McAulay fled from the woods looking terrified; he said the witch had captured him!

In Forest School, we made fairy houses, which Mr Simmons linked to our fairy tale story 'Into the Forest.'

In Geography, we learned what the different European flags look like.

In PE this week, we practised lots of races and field events for Sports Day and then had a wonderful time on Thursday when you cheered us on at Sports Day!

In RE, we looked at the Hindu harvest festival Pongal and we thought about what we are thankful for.

Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 20th June

We have had a fantastic week! In Maths this week, we finished our statistics unit looking at 2 way tables, bar charts and pictograms. We then moved onto looking at right angles in our shape unit.

In English this week we have been planning and writing our lost narratives about getting lost at the fair or in another busy but fun location!

In Science, we continued to learn about animals and human, vertebrates and invertebrates and more about skeletons and muscles.  In Forest School, we enjoyed imaginative play, making stories using our English as a stimulus and making dens. In Geography, we learned more about countries in Europe and their capital cities. In PE this week, we practised lots of races and field events for Sports Day! In RE we looked at bible verses and videos of stories from the bible to consider how harvest is spoken about and celebrated.

Have a great weekend.

Friday 13th June

We have had another fabulous week of learning! It has been a busy week filled with our end of year assessments; the children have all worked incredibly hard and should feel very proud of their efforts.

In Maths this week, we spent some time revising key concept such as our four operations; we practised times tables and the column method, as well as some other concepts like fractions and time. We then did our arithmetic and reasoning papers.

In English this week we enjoyed writing a setting description and exploring the text further; we will be writing a 'lost narrative' soon where our main character becomes lost in an exciting, busy place!

In Science, we learned about vertibrates and invertibrates; we explored whether animals had a backbone or not and looked at their skeletons. In Music, we practised for our music concert! In Forest School, we enjoyed fun with friends making dens and playing imaginative games. In Geography, we were learning about countries in Europe and capital cities. In PE this week, we enjoyed lots of athletics: running races, relays, long jump and javelin! Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 6th June 2025

A Fantastic First Week Back!

We’ve had a wonderful start to the new half-term, and the children have returned with lots of energy, enthusiasm and a brilliant attitude towards their learning. Here’s a little peek at what we’ve been up to this week:

Maths
In maths, we’ve been recapping some important topics to strengthen our understanding and build confidence. We’ve revisited fractions, the column method for addition and subtraction, explored shapes, and telling the time. The children have worked really hard and are showing great perseverance and problem-solving skills.

English
Our new English focus is the beautifully illustrated book Into the Forest by Anthony Browne. We’ve had some fantastic discussions about traditional fairy tales and what deeper meanings they might hold. We’re also beginning to explore the feelings and motivations of the main character in the story, using thoughtful language and imagination to support our ideas.

PE
In PE, we’ve kicked off our athletics unit. The children have been learning how to use their bodies in different ways to help them run faster and more efficiently. It’s been great to see everyone giving it their all, working on their speed, coordination and stamina.

Science
We’ve started our brand-new science topic: Animals Including Humans. This week, we’ve focused on what humans and animals need to survive and why a balanced diet is so important. The children are already asking brilliant questions and making thoughtful links to their own lives.

It’s been a busy, exciting start to the half-term, and we’re looking forward to all the learning and fun still to come. Have a lovely weekend!

23rd May

We have had a wonderful final week in Year 3.

In English this week, we have been planning and writing a secret diary describes the finding of a special artefact in Egypt. The tone has been chatty and informal and some children have really captured this style effectively.

In Maths, we have been adding, subtracting money and finding change. We have just started our statistics unit by interpreting pictograms.

In RE we looked at at the ten commandments which help Christians today to live how God wants them to live. We also recapped the story of the Good Samaritan and Zacheuss.

In PE this week we enjoyed playing a game of rounders and some of us competed in a tournament at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School!

In History, we continued to explore what the Romans brought to Britain. We then enjoyed a fun quiz to test our knowledge!

Have a lovely weekend.

16th May

We have had a wonderful week on Year 3!

In English , a mysterious lady who looked like an explorer (and some thought looked like Mrs Taylor) burst into our classroom to deliver 2 diary entries which she said 'mustn't get into the wrong hands!' We explored these and the language within. We explored the features of a diary and also had a go at writing diary sentences in an informal way.

In Maths, we have been recognising and adding money!

In RE we have looked at Jesus' greatest commandment, to love your neighbour as yourself and we explored the parable of the Good Samaritan.

In PE this week we enjoyed fielding skills, as well as batting and bowling in cricket and rounders, before playing a rounders match.

In History, we were learning about Roman Britain. We enjoyed presenting our findings to the class!

In Computing we have been enjoying using Scratch and we have also been enjoying using our instruments on Friday in our Music lessons with Mrs Landon. As well as playing some of our favourites like Mr Cool and Rocket ship, we learned a new one this week: the Eye of the Tiger!

Have a great weekend.
