Friday 21st November

We have had a fantastic week in Year 2 despite some changes in personnel! The children have been superstars and with the help of Miss Summerfield and Fewtrell have continued to thrive. It was so lovely to see a note from Miss Fetrell who commented how hard the children have worked and how lovely it has been to teach them; they have always shown that they are ready and respectful. Unfortunately, due to the changes, books will now be changed next week and homework will go out on Monday. Thank you for your understanding and kind words on the door; things will be back to normal from now.

Please enjoy some of the photos from Forest School and Computing below:

Friday 7th November

We have had a fantastic first week back. Books have now been changed and homework will restart again next Tuesday and will be due the following Monday.

In English this week, we used lots of picture clues to work out what our new book was about and make a prediction. We also explored some new vocabulary from our text which is called 'The Night Gardener.' All of our new topics can be found on the Year 2 page's topic web.

Books will be changed next Thursday as our phonics and guided reading sessions resume on Monday. Have a fantastic weekend.

Friday 18th July 2025

English – This week the children worked really independently to copy out their writing about Tattenhall. We have also used our writing skills to thank the people that have helped us throughout the year.

Maths – This week we have completed addition based word problems, used subtraction to complete missing number addition calculations and used a tally chart to discover the most popular letters in the English language – and then used this knowledge to beat Mrs Mitchell at hangman.

Forest School – This was a slightly damp Forest School session. The children presented Mr Simmons with a card they had made – for many Forest School is the highlight of their week. The children were keen to develop their fire lighting skills, so it was the perfect weather condition for this! I found it wonderful to see the resilience of the children who didn’t find it so easy and lovely to watch the patience with which their friends encouraged them. Some great words of wisdom were passed on. Mr Simmons also lit a fire and some toasted marshmallows.

Art – We used a wax resist technique to colour summer themed objects. We drew patterns with crayons and mixed watercolours to paint over the patterns.

PE – After our warm-up of chaos tag we practised many of the skills we had learnt this term in various relay races. The sprint, bowling for golden eggs as well as dribbling with a football so that our keen footballers could show off their skill.

Celebration Assembly – this week everyone in the class was chosen to be in the 2% club. We felt this was a perfect example of how the children value each other. So this week the whole class was in the 2% club.

It is Miss Hayes last day on Tuesday next week and we wish her all the best as she begins her teaching career in September.

Thank you all for being brilliant this year, we have loved getting to know each and every one of you! Enjoy the summer, stay safe and we will see you back in school in September.

Friday 11th July 2025

English – We have been writing a recount all about our trip to Tattenhall, ensuring that we include lots of detail and correct punctuation. We will be publishing these next week so that the children have a lovely written reminder of their brilliant residential trip.

Maths – We completed the position and direction unit and have moved on to consolidating our maths work from across the year by completing problem solving activities.

Forest School – Despite the heat we were keen to try out our fire lighting skills. Using a special bow we tried the friction method but we made heat, smoke but sadly no fire despite all our efforts. Then we used strikers but even this was tricky! Some sat with their feet in some cool water. Some made their own mobile phone and some made ‘hot chocolate’ in the mud kitchen.

Art – We reflected on all we had learnt about L.S. Lowry and did a final drawing.

PE – Mrs Hartley taught us some lovely summer dances!

Music – We used percussion instruments to accompany our ‘Down in the Jungle’ compositions.

It is Miss Hayes last day on Tuesday next week and we wish her all the best as she begins her teaching career in September.

Music – We listened to some sounds of the forest, then listened to the sounds different instruments made. We used the sounds they made to work in small groups to compose our own pieces of music.

Art – we have completed a drawing using a one-point perspective template. The children found this fascinating and were really proud of their work, based on those of LS Lowry.

English – the children published their invention narratives and created their own story book. We have now started rethinking about our inventions to create a manual on how to use them and what they are used for.

Maths – in maths we have completed the statistics unit, they children showed great understanding and loved creating their own tally charts and pictograms. Next week we will begin the new unit position and direction.

Geography – We have completed the end of unit test about human and physical features in towns, villages and cities in the UK and in Kenya. We will use this knowledge to spot different human and physical features when we are walking around Tattenhall during the residential.

Enjoy your weekend,

Geography – in geography we have been comparing a village in England (Tattenhall) and a village in Kenya. The children loved seeing what life is like in a school in Kenya and we have discussed the similarities and differences to Tattenhall and our own school.

RE – We have been learning what happened at the Ascension and Pentecost, and looking at art work that depicts the scenes before drawing their own interpretations.

Forest School - This week was hot, hot, hot. Thankfully it was much cooler in the woods. Mr Simmons talked to us about being kind to each other and kind to nature. Then he showed us how to make pots. This was the perfect activity for a warm afternoon - sitting calmly, shaping the cool clay. Next week we hope to fire them! Some chilled out in the hammocks, others cooked in the mud kitchen and some were kept busy with a new litter of ‘puppies’.

Art – This week we have created seascapes using Lowry’s technique of mixing primary colours to make a variety of colours and shades. We will be using this technique to paint our final project.

PE – More Sports Day practise this week, practising the Sprint, relay and a type of obstacle race. If you do not know what colour t-shirt your chld should wear for Sports Day next week please ask.

Computing – We leant about the type of content is safe to share and about giving or denying permission. We discussed what is meant by ‘pressure’ and how people might try to persuade you to do things you don’t want to do.

Music - We all wrote our own version of ‘Down in the Jungle’. Most of us sang it to the rest of the class either with a partner or on our own and without a backing track. The confidence was astounding.

Church – Thank you to Reverend Sandi and her team for welcoming us. After a lovely walk to church we had a sermon about being kind and caring about each other. Reverend Sandi was especially impressed with our singing.

PE – We worked on being a supportive team member, sitting down when we had had our turn and cheering each other on!

Computing – We learnt a about keeping personal information safe and how to create a password that was easy to remember but impossible for others to guess.

RSE-

We have completed our RSE units this week, the children were able to identify parts of the human body that are private, explain that a person’s genitals help them to make babies when they grow up and understand that humans mostly have the same body parts but that they can look different from person to person. We also explained what privacy means and that you are not allowed to touch someone’s private belongings without their permission. The last lesson was about secrets; to understand that there are unsafe secrets and secrets that are nice surprises. Identifying how inappropriate touch can make someone feel and who to tell if you are being touched in a way that you don’t like.

Thank you for all the donations of chocolate, the chocolate tombola stall will certainly be full at the Garden Party!

Friday 6th June 2025

Welcome back, the end of the school year has arrived. It will be a busy half term so please keep an eye on the dates on the school newsletter.

English – We have started our new book Rosie Revere Engineer. The children have enjoyed reading the book and learning about her crazy inventions. They have been able to write poems, discuss the book and answer comprehension questions about the text. Next week we look forward to designing our own inventions.

Maths – We have started to learn how to tell the time on an analogue clock, we have been very impressed with the children’s knowledge so far as this can be a tricky area of maths to learn. Thank you for your support in using clocks at home and it is nice to see children telling the time on their own watches too.

Music – Our theme this term is ‘Down in the Jungle’, we learnt the song and then adapted it to different jungle animals.

Geography – We have started learning about human and physical features on our planet, the children have been able to recognise physical features such as mountains and rivers, and human features such as houses and roads.

Friday 23rd May 2025

We are so proud of the children for completing their SATs this week. All children completed reading comprehension papers, an arithmetic paper, a reasoning paper and a spelling, punctuation and grammar paper (SPaG).

History –

The last week of learning about the Queens saw us looking at the life of Queen Elizabeth II, and discussing who the monarch is now. We have learnt how life in Britain has changed since Queen Elizabeth I reign to Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

D.T. – This week we painted our moving monsters using the colour mixing skills we learnt about in our Art lessons. Some used bubble wrap or cotton wool to create a special finish. Then we created linkages to make the monsters move. What made this lesson special for me was the way that the children helped each other.

PE – Last lesson of cricket was batting practise. Holding a cricket bat correctly feels odd to begin with, but the correct technique is important! We finished by playing the golden egg game, this time using our using our new batting skills.

Computing – We have continued with word processing skills. Each typing a sentence about our moving monster, using full stops and capital letters.

Forest School – This week the children impressed with their persistence. Mr Simmons showed us how to tie bundles of sticks together and place them in special locations to create homes for bugs. Some of us loved this and spent some time just quietly doing this with focus and concentration. Some painted rocks for Sterling and some were trying to dig a hole for badgers or foxes. I am pleased that the muddy forest school season has come to an end but it seems that the dry, dusty mud can make just as much mess!

This week we said goodbye to Sterling. The children made him a card with much help from Miss Hayes and we painted him some rocks as we know that this is something that he is passionate about. We wish him and his family well in their new adventure.

Have a lovely half term, don’t forget there is an Inset day on Monday 2nd June so the children will be back in on Tuesday 3rd June 2025.

Spelling –

Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:

knit, knock, gnaw, gnome, wrong, wrist, baby’s, book’s, half, parents

Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.

English – We have completed out letter to persuade the king to allow darkness back into the kingdom. Most of this week we have improved out knowledge of poetry. To begin with we were not particularly keen – then we learnt that actually poetry can be fun. Some poems are even quite short. Some of us were actually quite good at making our poems rhyme. Many of us even enjoyed performing our poems in a fun competition!

Maths – We have nearly completed the fractions unit now by learning what a unit fraction is and a non-unit fractions, then finding quarters and three quarters of a shape and an amount.

Science – This week we tested various fabrics to decide which would make the best warm, waterproof coat. No fabric was warm, waterproof or smooth next to our skin. When Mrs Mitchell cut open a coat, it was made with 3 different fabrics!

History – We have been studying Queens of England who have been influential with improving our country. To start with, we explored Queen Elizabeth I and learnt that she allowed more entertainment and opportunities for people to explore and express their talents. Then how Queen Victoria improved life in England and contributed to national achievements during her reign. We remembered lots of information from our Victorian topic and could talk about lots of inventions that changed people’s lives during the Victorian period.

Music – We played 2 lines of ’Wet and Windy’ before it got too noisy. We wrote our own version of ‘I hear thunder’, using other types of weather and making sure the rhythm matched the original. Some went to Reception to perform their song!

D.T. – We thought about which materials we would use to make our moving monsters before drawing 2 possible designs, surveying our friends to find out which they liked and them making our final decision.

PE – We practised our overarm bowling – how many times could we hit the wicket?

Forest School – Mr Simmons showed us how to make twists out of clay. We then used some of our scientific methods of changing materials like poking, pinching, twisting and rolling to make various clay sculptures. Mr Simmons particularly liked the minibeasts!

Next week all year 2 children will be completing their SAT papers, this will be completed very informally and we haven't mentioned it to the children so it will be like normal work for them to avoid any unnecessary worry. The results will be used to inform teacher judgements for the end of key stage data, you will be informed of your child's results on the end of year school report.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Forrester and Mrs Mitchell

Spellings –

Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:

little, tickle, cancel, tunnel, animal, equal, April, pupil, child, children

Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.

English – The King who Banned the Dark. How could we persuade him to unban the dark? We thought of lots of really good reasons that the dark was useful for: To sleep so we don’t get tired and grumpy, for special celebrations that involve fireworks or bonfires and how would Santa deliver presents in the dark?

Maths – We continued work on fractions including: quarters, thirds and the whole. They were really good at working out the whole number of sweets when told the fraction!

Music – We are now three bars along Wet and Windy. We are getting more precise in our timing and finger work.

D.T – Today we used cardboard and split pins to create levers and pivots. This was an experiment before designing our very own moving monster. The children really loved this task and decided that thick card was better but if that if we had to use thinner card then shorter strips were more rigid.

Science – We have started the topic – Materials and their properties. We identified the purpose of materials. Then we sorted them according to their properties. Next week we will look at the best fabrics to make a coat. If anyone would like to donate an old coat that we could cut up, that would be very helpful.

PE – Following our Quik Cricket program we tried to bowl under arm. This made the ‘Golden Egg’ game a bit more challenging! To finish, because we are celebrating VE this week, I rolled a large ball across the playground and the children took it in turns to try and hit it with their tennis balls. No-one did. Hitting a moving target was a really hard job for those that tried to defend us from enemy aircraft!

Forest School – VE themed, the children made bottle rocket planes and had lots of fun shooting them up in the air, Mr Simmons set them off and some nearly got stuck in the trees!. Another activity was a clay models, we had gas masks, poppies and tanks.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Tattenhall meeting on Thursday, I have uploaded the Powerpoint into the Year 2 blog area of the website.

Forest School – Inspired by pictures sent in by a friend who was a young lad at the end of World War 2 many of us chose to make clay and wooden models of object that would have been commonly seen at the time. There were several tanks and even a gas mask. This is in preparation for a special Forest School next Thursday.

8th May is the 80th anniversary of VE day, there will be a special picnic lunch and VE day activities in forest school that afternoon.

Have a lovely long weekend with the bank holiday. The learning exhibition is on the Tuesday morning when we return, the children are looking forward to sharing their work with you again.
